Piastri secured his fourth win of the season at the Miami Grand Prix by overtaking Norris with a 4.630-second lead, marking his third consecutive victory after triumphs in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. McLaren celebrated their 51st 1-2 finish in team history with this double podium. Russell managed to surpass Verstappen for third place, maintaining his streak of top-five finishes in every race this season.

The sixth round of the 2025 F1 season also signaled the start of the European-American segment of races. During qualifying sessions preceding this event, Max Verstappen narrowly claimed pole position from Lando Norris by just 0.065 seconds; Antonelli secured third while Piastri started from fourth position. Pre-race strategies indicated that starting on C3 medium tires followed by switching to C4 hard tires would be optimal for a single-stop strategy; notably eight out ten teams had prepared two new sets medium tires per driver anticipating potential safety car or red flag scenarios.

As the starting lights extinguished, the lead contenders, Verstappen and Norris, immediately launched into a fierce wheel-to-wheel battle hurtling towards the critical opening corner. Their machines ran perilously close, vying for the optimal line through Turn 1. Norris, exhibiting bold intent, attempted an ambitious move around the outside of Turn 2 in an effort to seize an early advantage. However, this aggressive maneuver left him vulnerable, and he was unfortunately forced wide off the racing surface, a costly error that saw him plummet several places down the order to sixth position.

In the same frenetic opening moments, several other drivers capitalized on the unfolding chaos. Antonelli, Russell, and Piastri demonstrated sharp race craft and decisive positioning, each managing to advance their standing in the pack by skillfully navigating the turbulent first lap. The early rhythm of the race was then dramatically interrupted by an incident further back. A collision occurred at Turn 1 involving Doohan and Lawson. The contact proved terminal for Doohan’s race, as his front left tire suffered a puncture, forcing him into immediate retirement. Lawson, though spinning as a result of the impact and dropping to the absolute rear of the field, was able to continue, albeit with significant ground to recover. Race control promptly deployed the Virtual Safety Car to neutralize the field and allow marshals to attend to the stranded vehicle and debris. Following a review of the incident, the stewards determined that no further action was warranted regarding the contact between Doohan and Lawson.

Once the Virtual Safety Car period concluded on lap three, the race pace immediately surged. Verstappen wasted no time in re-establishing his dominance, rapidly pulling out a significant one-second advantage over the second-placed car within a single lap, showcasing his potent performance. The midfield battles continued to intensify. On the subsequent lap, Piastri executed a well-timed and precise overtake on Antonelli, successfully claiming provisional third position as the cars streamed through the middle sector. Further back, Norris, clearly on a recovery charge after his early setback, began to scythe through the field with impressive speed and determination. He first dispatched Sainz, executing a clean pass, and then swiftly moved past Russell. His relentless pursuit culminated on lap nine when he successfully overtook Piastri heading into Turn 11, a decisive move that saw him reclaim the third position he had lost in the opening laps, completing a remarkable comeback drive in the early phase of the event.
